While it is not known exactly how it works on the brain, it is believed that Risperdal blocks certain receptors on some of the brain’s nerves, thus altering communication normally done by chemical neurotransmitters. When given to adolescent boys at doses commonly used for the treatment of psychotic symptoms, the hormone prolactin is produced at abnormally high levels. Prolactin stimulates breast development. In addition to noticeable breast tissue, gynecomastia causes pain, nipple discharge, and psychological trauma.
