In order for a product to be considered Novel it must have been made available pre May 1997. Despite there being many references to oil from the Cannabis Sativa L Strain as early as 1934 and a simple google image search would demonstrate the same, it seems that the European Commission has made a very broad brush statement, which the press has looked to sensationalise. After reading statements released by the HFMA who are the voice of the UK’s natural Health Industry and represent over 120 manufacturers and suppliers, Canna Pro who have had a call with the Food Standards Agency, together with the well documented statement from the World Health Organisation accepting the safety profile of CBD in their review last year, and understanding that as far as we know, the European’s commissions view has not been corroborated by the Foods standards Agency, Taylor Mammon challenge the European commissions statement. Whilst we take all statements made by the European Commission extremely seriously, in light of the above and knowing that extracts of cannabis sativa L have been documented and consumed for nearly a century, therefore demonstrating a clear history of CBD as a supplement it can not be viewed as Novel.
