Wellness Educator and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Frank Melidona from the Santa Barbara Care Center at The Villages Health®, discusses how to manage the amount of food you eat by focusing on portion size. This video is just one of many that offers health and wellness tips at Dr. Melidona explains that restaurants use large plates to give consumers the notion that they are getting a lot of food for their money. Unfortunately, this can encourage eating a larger portion size than we need. He urges viewers to go into their grandmothers' heirloom china to examine what a properly proportioned plate size looks like. In this regard as to portion size, what most consumers should be eating is the food that will fit on a 9-inch plate. In fact, the 9-inch plate is the portion size recommended by the American Diabetes Association. Furthermore. Dr. Melidona says that plate also needs to be managed as far as the types of food that we eat. He encourages dividing a 9-inch plate into four quarters, each of which should contain an equal amount of fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins, with fruits and vegetables occupying at least half the 9-inch plate.
