Hello everyone! In today's video, I will be talking about the late 1990's diet pill scandal where the lawyers representing the victims of the diet pills scammed their clients. 𝐋𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨! Fen-Phen represents the fenfluramine and phentermine, the drugs combined together to form weight loss pills that were marketed heavily in the 1990s. People who took these pills had multiple side effects, such as damage to the mitral and aortic heart valves and a serious lung condition known as pulmonary hypertension. The drugs were withdrawn from the U.S. market in 1997. More than one million people who suffered from the side effects of the drugs filed lawsuits against the manufacturer, Wyeth. Julie Flessas, a critical care nurse turned attorney, was influential in those trials. In 2002, her Mequon law firm hired cardiologists in Kansas City to send echocardiogram technicians to Milwaukee to perform ultrasound scans on fen-phen users. They set up testing sites in hotels with hospital beds and state-of-the-art equipment to replicate doctor's offices. They scanned the hearts of more than 2,000 fen-phen users within a year. The victims have not been benefited from the lawsuits because of the lawyers involved in the case. Many people who never took the pills claimed the compensation, but thousands of people who actually suffered from the side effects of the pills are still waiting for the compensation.
