By Melanie Torre TYLER, TEXAS (KLTV) - For the first time in a decade, the FDA has approved a new drug to help people lose weight. It's called Qsymia, but the drug was previously known as Qnexa. The FDA required a name change to avoid confusion with another medication. East Texas doctors and pharmacists say, though the medication has been approved, it will be awhile before it's available in pharmacies. "The basic thinking about this medication is that it's supposed to make you feel full, and decrease your appetite so you eat less," says Dr. Bryan Lowery at Trinity Clinic Manhatton in Tyler. The drug was just approved Tuesday, but Dr. Lowery says he is already seeing people request it. Though, not everyone requesting the drug is the ideal patient for it. "It's not for everybody. I think people with diabetes who are grossly obese... this will be a benefit for them in the future," Dr. Lowery says. Dr. Lowery says he is not prescribing the drug until he knows if it's safe. Qsymia is a combination of Phentermine, an appetite suppressant, and Topiramate, a drug commonly prescribed for people with seizures. "They have found that people on the Topiramate were losing some weight. It's because [part of] the brain was being filled a little faster, so people were feeling like they were full and not eating as much," says University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler Pharmacist Dianne Shackleford. Both drugs in Qysima work to control the appetite. However, Shackleford says Qsymia won't come without side effects. "Tingling in the hands and feet, some taste sensation differences, and constipation are side effects," Shackleford says. She says the more dangerous side effects include birth defects and heart problems. Dr. Lowery says doctors will have to be careful about who they prescribe the new drug to. "Look at the list of drugs the FDA has approved, and later down the line there are problems with that medication," he says. For now Dr. Lowery says Qsymia could be a very good drug for a lot of obese people. East Texas pharmacists say they don't expect the drug to be on the market for a few more months. Pharmacists also say they do not yet know how much it will cost. #leannx keto gummies review #information on keto diet pills #algarve keto gummies price
