So while it’s extremely beneficial for people with certain conditions, it’s not for everyone. What do you eat on the keto advanced weight loss diet? The keto diet is essentially a high-fat diet — your meals are 70 or 80 percent fat; about 20 percent protein; and about 5 percent carbohydrate. It is not an Atkins high-protein diet. The keto advanced weight loss diet switches you from burning glucose (which carbs provide) to burning ketones (which fat produces) for energy. When you do this, interesting things happen: Your metabolism speeds up. Your hunger goes away. Your muscle mass increases. Your blood pressure and heart disease risk profile improve. A ketogenic diet (or keto) is predominantly made up of high-fat foods – including butter, oils, meat, fish, eggs and cheese – and very low-carb vegetables such as cauliflower and leafy greens. This forces the body to burn fat for fuel, rather than glucose. In order to maintain that state, known as ketosis, followers typically restrict their carbohydrate intake to less than 50g a day. And, as protein can also be broken down into glucose, that has to be restricted, too. Being low in fibre, high in saturated fat and red meat, and extremely restrictive, the keto advanced weight loss diet does not really align with nutritional guidelines issued by government experts. The diet’s critics say it is, at best, a passing trend and, at worst, a socially acceptable form of disordered eating.
