Indian Weight Loss Diet: Sheetal, was Obese when I met her. Unfortunately, out of ten people, one person is Obese in India. Sheetal being an Indian wanted what Indian diet will be suitable for her for weight loss. Weight loss diet like Atkins, liquid diets or other western diets won't work for most of the Indians as they prefer Indian Cuisine more. Most Indians are vegetarians and their preferences are mostly not accommodated in diets. I have to customize weight loss diet for Sheetal based on her Indian cuisine taste. Besides, different states in India have different cuisine to suit their palate. People from the north of India prefer lot of chapattis (wheat) which is much healthier than the south Indian counterpart, who prefers rice as their staple food. South Indians eat a lot of gravies and vegetables. North Indian cuisines contain a lot of fats and butter. Indian Weight Loss Diet Generally traditional Indian meals in itself are extremely healthy. While Indians have the same rice and wheat for carbohydrates like the bread, pasta and cakes in the western world, Indians have more vegetables, fruits, pulses (dhal) incorporated into our daily meals. Unfortunately, most of the Indians started eating more western junk food, that too consuming large portion which leads to Obesity. Indian meals are filled with items like Idly, Dosas, Upma, Poha, Dhoklas, Parathas, chapattis etc. but you don't have to cut out these items because unlike their western counterparts, these are not processed and are hence filled with plenty of vitamins, minerals and fiber. I had suggested the following diet for Sheetal: Breakfast: 2 Dosas/ 2 idlis/ one bowl poha/ one bowl upma/ 2 chappatis Coffee/ tea with low fat milk Lunch: One Bowl Rice/ 3 chappatis with vegetables Sprouts salads Snacks: Almonds, Walnuts of small portions. Plus black tea with lemon. Dinner: Mixed Vegetable soup sprinkled with pepper and salt to taste. 2 chappatis with sabji / 2 dosas/ 2 idliy Needless to say Sheetal was able to reduce her weight by 5 pound first month and overall 40 pounds in a period of seven months .Naturally, she was over the moon when I met her recently and was happy to inform me that she is getting married shortly.
