You know there's many things you should be doing, you probably know how to do these things and how long it will take, but you just don't do it. How to get self-motivated? That's a topic that I decided to cover in this video answering one of the questions from a community member about motivation. Key points: We can look at two types of motivation. Passive motivation is happening randomly and something that's completely outside of our control. It can suddenly give you the feeling that you're invincible, you get focused and get a lot of things done. Typically the passive motivation lasts a few days. It's not something we can rely on as we can't predict or control when it's going to come. A better thing to invest in would be cultivating discipline and practicing healthy behaviors on a daily basis to turn these actions into automated habits. Then there's active motivation. This is the type of motivation we get after we've started taking action. And it's one that is completely under our control. Once you start working on something you get motivated. Or we could say, motivation appears when you've decided to start taking action, and you took the first step. Active motivation is great, and once you become aware of its existence, it can be a life-changer. Now, the question is, why aren't we doing these things we know we should do? And that's what Jonathan asked in his question. He has a plan. He knows what to do but he's not inspired to do it. What's wrong here? One thing we often forget is the fact that as human beings we like to express ourselves by doing the things we're already good at. And when you just start out in health and fitness, going to the gym, eating healthy, preparing your food and doing different exercises you're not good at these things. Because your skill-set is still under development, there's less incentive for your mind to want to express these skills. On the other hand, when you talk to someone who's already fairly strong, you can't keep them outside of the gym. If they don't go to the gym they start feeling bad. This concept applies to many areas of our lives. I don't know how to dance, and I haven't invested the time into the skill of dancing, and now I don't like to dance. I can't express myself the way I want to; I'm far from the potential in this area, so I don't do it frequently. If I were a good dance I'd be the first person on the dance-floor leading people. A lot of people don't realize this relationship of skill level and motivation. The fact is, we're motivated to the things we're good at. And we can't wait to show ourselves and others how good we are at these things. So next time you ask yourself "Why am I not motivated?" it's probably because you're still going through the initial phases of learning the skill. And once you mastered it a bit, in a few months, motivation won't be a question anymore. You'll just do it.
