Erectile difficulties are very common and something I deal with daily in my medical practice. As men age, erection can be difficult to achieve, or it may not happen at all. It may not be satisfactory for penetration, or it may allow for penetration, but not last until climax. Of course, this naturally leads to a loss of self-confidence, a loss of self-esteem and negatively affects someone's intimate relationships. The causes can be broken down into two large groups: psychological and biological. Psychological causes include stress, depression, and relationship conflict. Biological factors include medication side effects, the influence of alcohol and recreational drugs, low testosterone, smoking, and metabolic problems like diabetes or high cholesterol. It’s important that we examine these issues in coming up with a comprehensive treatment plan for erectile difficulties. At Pagdin Health, we take a special interest in men's health issues, including erection performance, and we offer several approaches to treating these types of difficulties. One promising new therapy is injections of PRP or platelet-rich plasma, which takes place along the shaft of the penis to help to restore blood flow and sensitivity. This is commonly referred to as the “P-Shot”, and I've included a link to a video below that explains a little more how we do these types of injections. There has been a slew of anecdotal reports in the medical literature for the last several years, claiming that PRP can be helpful for erectile difficulties. And now we are finally seeing some randomized controlled trials. Dr. Poulios published his trial in May of 2021 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, where 60 patients underwent two injections a month apart with either PRP or placebo. In the PRP group, 20 out of 29 had meaningful improvements in their erection performance while only seven out of 26 in the placebo group reported improvement. And the good news is there were no serious adverse effects reported. Possible side effects of injections of PRP include mild bruising, which is quite temporary and minor pain at the injection site.
