Gaining muscle whilst losing fat is not only POSSIBLE, but it's extremely common in many trainees. I've seen it hundreds upon hundreds of times at this point, and FAR MORE than barely noticeable! That being said, I actually agree with both Mike Israetel and Jeff Cavaliere on this issue, it's just their titles that aren't quite accurate. This is a good article on body recomp. Young, old, beginner, advanced, fat, lean, male, female...recomps are shown pretty commonly across all populations. It is, of course, easier for beginners and those higher in body fat. Advanced lean athletes in particular would be better off allowing body fat levels to creep up a bit in most cases and have a phasic structure to their caloric intake.
