2018 update: Invokana MAY be associated with an increased risk of amputations. Farxiga and Jardiance have not shown this possible side effect. These drugs block the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, and cause glucose or sugar, to be spilled in the urine. This lowers blood glucose, as well as weight loss. The loss of 40-80 grams of sugar in the urine equates to 160-320 calories per day, or 15-30 minutes of exercise equivalent. The major side effect is vaginal yeast infections and urinary tract infections from the sugar feeding yeast and bacteria. They may also increase the risk od bladder cancer.
