Remember that it's your *average* calorie balance over the course of the week, month and year that determines net fat loss or fat gain. If you eat in a 500 calorie deficit Monday through Friday and then "reward yourself" by eating in a massive surplus over the weekend, you could easily undo a lot (if not all) of the weight loss progress that was made during the week. 2) Not accounting for "hidden" calories such as sauces, oils, liquids, snacks. If you've ever tracked your calories in detail then you know just how insanely fast these sorts of things add up. If you want to keep your total calories under control then stick to cooking spray instead of oil, lower calorie sauces, sugar-free beverages, and if you are going to snack, be very mindful of portions. 3) Over-estimating how many calories you're burning through exercise. Weight training and cardio don't burn calories at nearly as high a rate as you might think. People will often put in an hour at the gym and think they've melted off 1000 calories, not realizing it was actually less than half that amount. 4) Trying to lose weight FAST rather than focusing on sustainable habits. Aggressive cutting phases can be fine for those who are more experienced, but for those who are still new to this, very often it's the case that "fast equals slow" and "slow equals fast".
